Dirty Home Items People Surprisingly Forget to Clean

If you are among the people who pride themselves on the clean home they manage to maintain and are confident that no germ can escape the power of your mop, you should probably think again. You might be surprised to find out that some of the most bacteria-infested spots in a house also tend to be the most overlooked when it comes to cleaning. Those include:

  • Remote controls
  • Light switches
  • Doorknobs
  • Irons
  • Window frames

Germs’ Favourite Spots in a Home

Among the dirtiest items in a home are remote controls. With the rise of hand-held electronics, like smartphones and tablets, many scientists have decided to step out and warn humanity of the bacteria that live on the surfaces of our gadgets. The scare caused by germs on electronic devices, reminded people to clean their phones and portable computers on more frequent basis. However, few of them include remote controls in that group. Unfortunately, namely remotes are one of the dirtiest items you can find in a home today. To effectively sanitize the remote controls in your house, you can use a toothbrush or a cotton swab to wipe the surface of the remote with some alcohol. It does not take much time or effort, yet not many of us have even considered doing it.

Second on this list are doorknobs and light switches. It is not hard to guess why they rank among the best bacteria-growth environment. We constantly touch them with our hands and we rarely clean them. While we wash our hands a few times a day, the germs on our doorknobs and light switches lead an undisturbed existence. However, do not assume that you need to clean these items in your home with the same frequency as your hands. Once every time you do some cleaning around the house is enough. Wipe them carefully with a cloth dubbed in some vinegar. If you are not a fan of the smell, you can buy an antibacterial cleaner for an even better sanitation of your doorknobs and switches. Also don’t forget to clean the oven door seals as suggested at that Oven Cleaning London website. Be more meticulous with the once located next to your front door or your toilet.

While not cleaning your remotes and doorknobs may lead to the spread of germs on more surfaces around your home, not cleaning your iron is a slightly different story. Using a dirty iron to smooth your clothes will not transfer too much bacteria on them. However, it may leave unpleasant spots and specks on brighter pieces of clothing. Also, an iron that has not been cleaned for a long time may start to leave terrible burn marks on your clothes even when it is not too hot. The reason is that the protective coating can become sticky when it is not properly maintained. To clean your iron, use a solution of vinegar and salt or a liquid dish detergent. Don’t overlook the iron’s steaming vents either. Rub them with a cotton swab by gently twisting it.

Another thing that deserves a closer inspection is your window frames. They are one of dust’s favourite spots. What is even more disgusting is that they often look like a graveyard for insects. Even pollen tends to stick on the frames of your windows. That is why, if there are people with allergies or young children in your household, it is highly recommended to wash these areas of your home every week.
